There is some truth to the statement. Dynalink make a
rural modem. Which has better speed negitation, and it
does work well. 

My parents had a USR courier 56k (Dam good modem) out
on the farm and it was dropping off the net a lot, so
got rural modem on trail and it works much better. It
still drop connections but no where near as much. I
have sold a couple to other farmers who are very
pleased with it.

There is also a aussie out fit that makes "rural
modems
" as well.. not sure of the name tho.

Not cheap tho.. there are plenty of shops who still
