> Has anyone had experience with IBM's voice recognition software on
linux?

Viavoice was a lot more efficient than Dragon 3 years ago. The Linux
version is now dead. IBM has discontinued supplying the SDK. The
commercial version is still available (as viavoice dictation), but IBM
decided to sell them only to Americans. Anything to the contrary from
IBM NZ or IBM Oz are lies.

You always needed to *buy* the viavoice box to obtain a license. The
SDK only had a 30 day trial license. Alternatively, buy the expensive
versions of Mandrake 7.x or 8.0, but no later. The Mandrake version has
newer viavoice rpms with several problems fixed. You can't get updates
from IBM.

Yes, we all know it sucks.

In any case, the IBM commercial version is substandard. You can only
dictate into a text editor. It does not allow command-and-control.

You could try xvoice, but you'd still have to buy the box from IBM
(good luck trying) or obtain a legal Mandrake copy.

If you want speech recognition for linux, you have a choice between
viavoice. Everything else is at best experimental. Mind you,
experimental is a good word to attribute to viavoice dictation as well.

Read through the last 3 months of the ddlinux list for reasons why this
situation is not going to change.
