Subject: Linux Constantly Freezing

Hi All,

Currently I'm having terrible problems with Linux, both RedHat and Mandrake.
About once every hour or so, the mouse and keyboard freeze and the only
option I can think of is the little reset button. Both RedHat 8 and
Mandrake
9 do this, RedHat more so. Activities which have recently prompted such
freezes include deleting mail in Kmail and selecting a download destination
in Galeon. I have tried Mandrake with both Gnome and KDE, and Xfree versions
3.something and 4.something, and numerous programs but still the problem
persists.
At other times, the computer has periodic holidays, where parts of the
screen
are not redrawn for a while and the response to commands is very slow (about
30 seconds). This is despite having lots and lots resources and few programs
open.
When the keyboard freezes, even the little lights for CapsLock and so on
stop
working, and any other signs if life (such as hard drive access) cease.

Any suggestions??

Ian
