According to your argument, life-expectancy is maximum until the
heat-limit is reached, beyond which there's a sudden cutoff.

Reality is that chip failure rates are more than just simply
proportional to operating temperature. It's not a straight line.
Running something at 70 which normally runs at 40 has a seriously
reduced life expectancy. What that has to do with maximum operating
temperature? Nothing. It's what it says - maximum operating
temperature, i.e. above it, it's no longer guaranteed to function
correctly.
