To recap - Dialup modem on Com1 for Internet connect and a single nic to connect to local network. The box worked as advertised up to and including Fixes2. Following the install of Fixes3, the local network (eth0) stopped completely although indicating that it was ok. A complete reinstall did the same thing.
MD5 sums were correct for all files.

Can you upgrade to either 24 or preferably 32 megs?

The other thought I have is that it may have sprung a hardware fault on you. It's no longer exactly in the flush of youth you know. Try booting with a memtest86 floppy after adding more memory and see what happens.
