And yes, I realise that there are, unfortunately, a lot of cases where
you won't have write access to that file. If you're in that situation,
and it bothers you, find a better web hosting service or complain to
your existing one.
.htaccess causes Apache to do a lot more work serving each page in
directory heirarchy containing .htaccess files. On top of that, the
layered configuration you end up with can be confusing to set up and
troubleshoot.
