ah just the man
which card do you have and what kind of hassles, if any, getting to use
its 3D capabilities/hardware accleration?

I have a radeon 9600pro, so I had to use the proprietary drivers, which was interesting, as I run Debian and they don't supply a .deb package. It took me quite a while to get it to work, including a lot of googoling etc. In the end the key was in ATI's installation instructions - make sure the kernel does not have DRM compiled in. Now it works well, although I don't use that much 3D stuff in linux. Windows is still much better for games (ducking for cover) and as the video card has hardware directx9 support, I kind of want to get the most out of it. I think conflicts with Mesa also need to be watched. The driver replaces Mesa's openGL libraries, so upgrading Mesa can be a bad thing.
