So I reinstalled Debian from the installation beta on my laptop, and after a bit of fiddling and using someone else's XF86Config, almost everything that was working before is working again, and some things that weren't working are now (including, amazingly, suspend-to-disk).
However, there are a couple of irritating things that aren't so good. Now I can no longer 'su'. I can log in as root fine, but 'su'ing from my standard user account just results in su: Authentication Failure Sorry. whether it be from console or from an xterm. I've had a look at everything in /etc/pam.d, and to my untrained eye everything looks fine. Specifically, it doesn't look a lot different from my old /etc/pam.d directory (diffing a few likely looking files comes up with not much) I've had a look at /etc/security also, but most everything seems commented out there. I've tweaked a few things, including a line in /etc/pam.d/login which was commented out in my old configuration which required that root be logging in on a secure tty, but nothing seems to make any difference. I tried creating a 'wheel' group and adding myself to that, and uncommenting lines related to that, but to no avail. Do I need to restart something for the changes to take effect?
