Ouch, that *is* a serious explosion. What's taking it? Source?

That still leaves option 3: use a bigger box/disk for kernel diddling.
You could move the kernel source tree from /usr/src to anywhere with a
symlink. In fact having to compile it as root sucks - is this really
necessary? Does it have to be some particular place?
