I played with distcc when setting up my newest server a few months ago.
It's quite good but doesn't work for all packages (Apache and Subversion
didn't work for me because of the way they build). It's great for compiling
a kernel if you have a few machines available.
I have already bound 14 of our developers PC's into a 14 way distcc
compile farm. Grreat! Works very well.
Personally I have bigger plans and plotches though (don't tell anyone...)
in a company the size of Tait's with all the Linux PC's we have I can
build New Zealands largest super computer....
Out of vanilla desktops...
And no one need know...
There are still some bits and pieces I need though...
A way of rolling out upgrades and doing fully automated installs. (Yip, I
will attend the FAI talk at Linuxconf)
Binding all the hard drives into a hot pluggable 100 way RAID-5 system.
Distcc / ccache is great but it doesn't distribute the preprocessing,
splinting, automated test and linking steps. GFS is looking plausible.
A way of delivering 220v shocks to zap the hands that touch the power off
button at home time. (Currently I place yellow post-it notes over the
offending buttons.)
XEN looks promising. Perhaps I can quietly one night take over all the
Windows PC's as well, letting them run Windows in the foreground while I
burn Linux cycles in the background...
My dev group today, Tait's tomorrow, Christchurch, then South island,
then that irritating rock just north of us, then all those luscious PC's
cross the ditch....YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED!!
...pant..pant...
...ok, ok, so my morning coffee was a tad strong.
