My preference is for an Atheros based card. In linux they're supported by the MADWIFI project. atheros also works well under FreeBSD. If you want to do funky external aerials then you'll probably need a PCI card or an 11 Mbit prism card. None of the 54 Mbit PCMCIA cards seem to have aerial connectors these days. In a later email you said that you want it for an access point. Whats wrong with using a normal access point? The Linksys WRT54GL is an excellent platform for many purposes.
