don't search forums. search packages.ubuntu.com. Enter the name of the
missing file in the second search box and use it to find the package you
are missing. install it. rinse and repeat.

and maybe stick to your distro's packaging for all packages?
Issues are that these libraries are actually on the system, it is just that VMWare doesn't seem to be able to know where they are, the hacks suggested by Volker and others are beyond my capability (and available time). I am following the suggestion where ever possible to use $DISTRO packages but at this point it Gutsy doesn't have vmware available. It's a brand new Gutsy install, I have invested maybe 2 hours max in it so far (has otherwise gone really well) and am thinking of other virtualisation options or replacing it with 32bit. I see Rob's thread on virtualbox which is something I have seen suggested elsewhere for a "fix" for the situation I have. I'll be watching that thread with interest, and considering other options to keep with Gutsy generally.
