Yes, but probably not in your environment :-)

You might not want your 'users' to have real system accounts, which
complicates ssh setup.
You might not want the overhead of encrypting every file access over
the network.
You wouldn't run samba (server) on "every box", just on the ones with
decent backed-up redundant file storage.
Samba could replace CUPS' network facing aspect.
