I know this sounds silly but what happens if you shift them then lock
them?
I have not had this trouble.

they move back before i get a chance to lock them! this IS silly - I
can't believe I'm having this problem...
How about shifting them *while* they are locked? IE, make sure they are
locked, then move them.
Unlocked could mean "allow to float to 'best' position".
