I bought one of the 2wire Business ADSL modems off trademe (only
supplied to Telecom business customers, not available separately) which
have a much better reputation.

Unfortunately when the modem turned up it turned out to be the cheap
residential Thompson Wifi unit.

So I'm waiting for another 2wire to arrive and then I'm sending this one
back for a refund from the seller who got the description wrong ("I
thought all ADSL modems were the same").

Anyway, the point is that I've been using the cheapo Thompson for the
last few days and have had no problem with wireless access with two
laptops connecting with either Windows or Linux.

I have read a *lot* of complaints about the Thompson though so the
quality may vary considerably from unit to unit.
