I am using a dazzle smartcard reader without problem. I have usb_core, EHCI and UHCI all built into my kernel (2.4.19) as well as usb_storage.
Then I mount it as /dev/sda1 -t vfat /mnt/camera
(your device may be different-- check the kernel messages for USB device)
And then I can access the photos.
I updated my kernel to 2.4.20 and now my fujifilm 3800 is recognized, so don't need the card reader now. Thanks for the info. My camera now mounts on sda1 and I can upload as well as download. (usb-storage)
