How about accessing the disk with a system that doesn't have a new kernel and can't handle the new file systems? Would that be a good reason to go back? Some systems don't get updated because they aren't broken. But they may need access to data that is on a newer system. I suppose the newer system could copy the data onto a file system that the older system could access, but that seems like an unneeded extra step to me.
