Hi Keith,
Hi Also Greg.
And rest of List...An honest opinion please do not flame over it.
I saw your email as listed below and I hope you dont mind me putting in my 2
cents worth, not as a heavy Linux user, but a Linux novice, I have been
using Linux for 12 months or so, and someone who is rather capable with
Windows and Microsoft software. So some one from the dark side who is
supposed to sway you away from this devlish (Joke OK) Linux stuff.
Just to establish my credibilty with Microsoft stuff, I am and have been a
Microsoft Trainer since 1998, . I also teach and work with software from a
company called Citrix, 95% of my work is with Citrix. I have been working
with computers on a whole since 1990. I have had a resonable deal of
exposure to companies, comercial companies who do credit Linux with being a
good file server, router option as oposed to paying for microsoft licences.
Greg if you have Skippy to help you with the server, even if you are going
to pay him labor it will work out as being cheaper and probaly more reliable
than using the same from MS. MS products are designed basically so any
trained monkey, No offence, can install them and make them work to a certian
degree, but they are at time difficult to customise. Most comercial
businesses aren't yet considering putting linux on a users desktop as yet,
but if you have the support of someone competent it might also be worth your
while.
>From what I hear until recently Linux has no problems with most virus, but I
would guess that as it becomes more popular there will be some people who
will target it for virus attacks. Microsoft is attacked as it is a tall
poppy and people like to attack tall popies.
As for the Database connectivity, I dont konw of any of the ODBC (Database
network drivers) from windows work with a Linux server, but I would imagine
they would, Sun have their JDBC, same thing as Microsoft but using Java.
With Security there are several good books you can buy on Network security,
linux security specifically and several thousand people on this and other
lists to ask for where the holes are and how to fix them. Microsoft products
generally have no real security out of the box, you must spend some time
fixing the holes. Skippy if you need to borrow any books give me an email
reply, I live in Inala, Ph 32787673.
For a Windows 2000 Server with licences for 5 clients to access it will cost
you arround 2K aust. You will also need to have a machine as a server
runing at least 256M ram, more of course is better. To Run SQL, I have not
used it since version 6.5 but on that you really needed a minium of 128 Meg
of ram just for SQL above that of the OS, I would imagine that SQL 7 or 2000
will have much greater needs for memory and probably want its own server as
well.
Cheers for now, I hope that this dis-jointed peice of work helps, the basic
crux is I beleive on the server end it is possible, I dont have the skills
to make it work with Linux, but there are plenty who can. With the Desktop
with help from some competent linux users you might also be able to make
this work, but most companies are not going down this track at this moment.
Linux is a viable solution, give it a try.

Subject: linux as a file server
I have been asked by my Medical Practioner (Dr/Friend) who looks after
me on a regular basis, does a fantastic job BTW, for some advice which I
feel needs some more indepth perspective that I have.
His name is Dr. Greg Silver and the clinical practice has a number of
Doctors in attendance daily. In each surgery there resides a computer
workstation as well as at the front desk. It is also has a presence on
the internet as well as being able to hook into various medical
databases.
The question posed was the ability of linux to handle the Microsoft
software and traffic, the elimination of virii and security. Lastly the
ability of linux per se to handle microsoft SQL database's
transparently.
Now I would appreciate anyone replying to [EMAIL PROTECTED] directly
and cc me a copy so as I can keep a handle on this
for my info. I have give Greg a somewhat pruned talk on linux and its
capabilities but would bve grateful to the better daily informed
literati in this group if they would put in their two cents worth,
specifically as I am not ofay with SQL and databases.
I am sure that I can rely on Douglas, Dep, Lonni, Burns and their ilk to
put it into laymans language................... Muchly ta Guys.
