I got off work yesterday morning at 7am, went to a local diner for coffee and
breakfast, then came home to read some e-mail and go to bed. I caught some
of the early e-mails on this list and was shocked into disbelief. I was
finally able to get to www.cnn.com and read what they had to say. I don't
own a tv and haven't for 5 years(I'd rather spend the money on new computer
hardware). I'm currently working at a Speedway(gas station/mini-mart),
looking for IT work in this area. I got to work at 10pm and noticed that the
lot was packed and traffic was backed up for at least a block or two. The
guy that I relieved said that it had been that way since about 2:30pm. Some
people have been spreading FUD that gas was going to hit $5USD per gallon the
next day. The Speedway that I work for had dropped prices 3 cents that
afternoon. I was very busy till about 12:30am when we ran out of regular
unleaded and plus unleaded. We only had the premium unleaded left. The
price of premium unleaded was $1.84/gallon. Up the street about 5-6 blocks
our competitor had regular unleaded at $1.99/gallon. This is an inexcusable
act by gas companies that I hope will be punished by the federal government.
As I sat at work last night, I thought about the various e-mails on this list
stating what should be done and I remembered the words of Yoda(SW: EP1) "Fear
leads to anger...anger leads to hate...hate leads to suffering...". We as
Americans need to make sure that we keep our emotions in check when we are
talking about the retribution for these heinous terrorist acts. There is a
difference between swift justice(military or judicial) and blind attacks of
revenge. We need to find out who is responsible and once that is
conclusively proven, punish them for these acts. This will include those
countries and governments that harbor these terrorists. The terrorist
attack on the Pentagon is considered an 'act of war'. This phrase, 'act of
war' was used by President Bush earlier today in a news conference. While
some of the American public wants any/all Middle Eastern countries bombed,
the American government is trying to find out who is responsible and then
deal swift justice for these terrorist acts. My opinion is that the
terrorist group responsible doesn't want to claim responsibility because they
realize they have "woke a sleeping giant". These words were used by the
Japanese admiral that attacked Pearl Harbor. Americans don't take kindly to
being attacked on their own home soil. Nothing will galvanize the american
public in to action more than that. I was reading the local paper this
morning and it stated that at the end of a news conference by members of the
House and Senate, the lawmakers broke into a moving, impromptu rendition of
"God Bless America". We as Americans stand united against these terrorists,
regardless of political affiliation, race, or color.
I want to see justice served, not blind revenge.
