Japan did learn a hard lesson. They believed we would negotiate after Pearl
Harbor. The Japanese military had a very limited understanding
of the United States.
We fought a remorseless war. We sank everything in the Pacific that was
Japanese.
We routinely shot Japanese pilots in parachutes. We machine-gunned sailors
in the water.
We burned, bombed, and buried the Japanese army in various island campaigns.
Only a decision by FDR prevented the US from using poison gas
against the Japanese (I believe on Iwo Jima). A mistake, in my view.
When we began to fire bomb Japan, the B29's flew at 5000 feet. The updraught
was so strong the light Jap fighters were simply blown away. The smell
of burning human flesh sickened the crews. Some vomited. The fire bombings
only eased up when the supply of incendiary bombs ran short.
Later, we dropped atom bombs on Japan.
After the atom bombing, the only sentiment expressed by Americans was joy
that the war was over.
Few Americans expressed hesitation about using these methods. The Japanese
suicide bombers of WWII convinced one and all the Japs were inhuman.
That is what happens when you make Americans indignant.
