97.7 CHTZ FM, the rock radio station I listen to, and 2 sister stations, which
are located on the US / CA border across from Buffalo, started at 7AM this
morning a fundraiser to collect and donate to the Red Cross for disaster relief
in NY and DC.
They had events scheduled to end at noon which they did. However, so many
people, local citizens, businesses, police and fire dept. and listeners (myself
included via Telephone and VISA) provided such an overwheming response they
have extended the event and are still accepting donations. They had projected
5 - 10K maybe 15K if it went really well. The total is now nearing $100,000
(95K+).
Today is a national day of mourning in Canada, and we stand in sorrow, side by
side our US neighbours. There was a moving ceremony held in Canada's capital
today, of which I only managed to hear snippits, and pause for 3 minutes'
silence at noon today which was more powerful than I could have imagined.
As many list members have pointed out, it's unfortunate that it takes things
like the events of this week (the worst in humans) to bring out the best in
humans. When it does though, it is good to see.
