On the day of the bombings, when the world was speechless in horror and all words failed, this simple, profound statement, came from the German Chancellor. It did not just mouth platitudes of comfort to 'you lot' that you weren't alone. It legitemised non-american grief. I was allowed, and my Prime Minister was allowed, to cry, openly, for a city I've never been in. We don't feel sorry for you, we feel horrified for *us*. When you read, as you will, Nato activating it's alliance of one in, all in, when you read about Anzacs activating their treaty boot's and all, when you read about Russia allowing US troops into Uzbekhistan,. Don't read it as moral machismo. We are telling you a lot more than just 'support', we are saying this is OUR war. Many / most? soveriegn nations have made the decision, independantly from you, that because their cities and their people are utterly vulnerable, because there can be no real defence, terrorism *will* be eradicated _regardless_ of cost. The cost might be in peoples lives, in war, or simply giving them a trillion dollars to go away. Eradication is not the same as revenge. It is now 'ok', like it never was before, for a terrorist to flick a nuclear weapon anywhere, the ante just got raised. Wiping out 7,000 people and cutting pilot's throats is now passe. America is not the sole repository of wisdom, 'blindingly obvious' is universal and most countires have done the math, so to speak. Just like you, we don't know all the answers. Just like you, some of us think a colt 45 is / isn't the answer. Just like you, some of us are looking at the reasons why anyone could hate humanity that much and what we did to deserve it.
