Just an aside and a shameless plug.  If you make the effort to install
gentoo_rc6, you get free-gratis the ability to compile (lengthy!) a
working version of kde and gnome and almost anything your heart
desires.  Occasionally, you may need to wait a bit until the
developers have cooked the install packages for later versions, but
some times you avoid some of the bugs that way, too.

Me, too.  I run XFCE, and I have available any KDE or GNOME app that I
need to run (depressingly few).
