As I found out via the borland newsgroups (see http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-users@linux.nf/msg07067.html ) Kylix 1 is known to have some problems with kernel 2.4. If you're running 2.4 you'll want to head to borland and try out kylix 2 instead which might operate a little bit better. It's been working for me thus far whereas Kylix 1 caused nothing but problems.
