You can use the convert program from ImageMagick to do this. I'm attaching
a short perl script that I use to build a web page to catalog all the
images in a directory structure. A little bit of hacking on the geometry
option to convert and generating the file names, and it may well do what
you want. You might consider making a directories for each resolution
group, then you could access using something like
pathto/640x489/imagename.gif.
This script probably requires a couple of mods to work on systems other
than those we set up:
1. Comment out the csspath line near the top.
2. Change ``gfind'' to ``find'' (I use the ``g'' prefixes even on Linux
systems because I want to use the same commands on any *ix system I
maintain).
