I don't know that this is their reasoning. Intel worked very closely with various OSS groups to make sure that their I64 had good support in Linux. I think Intel is just looking to make a buck. Keep in mind that even if the Intel compiler is faster, better etc than gcc, this isn't all that much of a coup.
