I browsed the kde mailing lists and found that the delay in opening a folder in konqueror might be due to a bug in qt-2.3.2. So I downgraded to qt-2.3.1 and experienced no problems with kde up to now, although the kde 2.2.2 rpms on RH 7.2 seem to be compiled against qt-2.3.2 (I had to use rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force qt ... to downgrade).
