Hi,

My ISP needs to run some tests on my line and asked me to connect a
pc/laptop directly to the line bypassing the router using a PPPoE
connection.

The internet connection is optic fibre broadband and I have no problem
connecting to the internet using the router.

So I'm taking the end of the Ethernet cable plugged into the WAN port
in the router and plug it into my network card while leaving the other
end of the cable plugged into the ONT.

Then I'm configuring a PPPoE connection. The PC I'm using is running
Ubuntu 16.04 MATE desktop.

I tried both via Network Manager (NM) and pppoeconf with no luck.

With NM I used this guide (I know, but it is what my ISP's support gave
me):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx-G-Sn6IhY

and with pppoeconf I just ran the command with sudo.

The Network Manager is saying in syslogs that 'ppp-manager: pppd timed
out or didn't initialize our dbus module' while pppoeconf complains
about not finding a PPPoE Access Concentrator.

What am I doing wrong?

TIA,
Adrian
