Why not? They (like m4 hackers, the other group affected by the historic difference between ANSI X3.4:1968 and ECMA-6/ISO-646) have the choice of either stubornly sticking with an outdated convention or enjoying a typographically more pleasing result by updating or extending the relevant syntax.
