Great initiative ! I hope you will succeed in your project and I'm looking
forward for collaboration on Linux driver development in the future :-)

Among those cameras I've only tested the Creative and Logitech webcams
personally. You shouldn't list the Logitech QuickCam Fusion, as it has a bad
firmware bug that makes Linux support unreliable.

Check http://www.quickcamteam.net/hcl/linux/logitech-webcams for more
information about Logitech webcams.

I asked Microsoft for hardware samples and they simply ignored my request.
Nothing surprising there, although I've heard from another developer that it
largely depends on who you contact in the company.

I haven't had any contact with Hercules.

Creative Labs offered a free Optia webcam. My contact there was very friendly,
and welcomed the Linux UVC driver project.

Logitech has proved the most supportive so far. I've received hardware samples
and documentation. They set up a community website at
http://www.quickcamteam.net/ for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows users and
developers. You can definitely flag them as programmer friendly and Linux
friendly, at least for their webcam department.

Best regards,

Laurent Pinchart
