The diagnostic mode is composed by low-level utilities. Even if you  
format the Flash memory (with dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda for example)  
, you can access to this mode. So the utilities are saved in an other  
memory and are part of the bootloader.

To confirm, we can sniff the communication between iTunes and the iPod  
during an update. Heardy put links on the website

I will test it when I will get the iPod.
