I don't have Mac OS X either, and Amarok works with my Ipod Nano just fine. 
You don't need Linux on your IPod just for "normal" use, only if you want to 
customize it, like to be able to play .ogg files, change interface, etc.

That aside, if I'm not entirely mistaken, noone even knows what kind of 
encryption they use on the firmware, or what chips do what (though there has 
been some qualified guesses), or even why Apple is doing this, so there's 
certainly a lot to do.

Another question, though, has anyone tried contacting Apple directly and just 
asking? Maybe mentioning something about the legality of this 
anti-competitive behaviour in certain jurisdictions.
