I have a little windows program which acts as a server to a 5250 emulation
and as a client to the AS400. I use this to log the datastream and figure
out exactly what the emulator is sending. This only works easily if the
emulator connects to remote port 23 and stays there. Unfortunately, CA does
not stay on port 23; instead it connects to multiple ports on the AS400
making tracing more difficult.
One could use a simpler 5250 emulator like Netsoft or Spry. Another option
is to do a comm trace on the AS400 side. This can be restricted to a
messages from a specific PC.
If you have a simpler emulator and would like a copy of my Windows based
port sniffer, please let me know
