I've been using tn5250 this summer to connect to a System 36 running
inside a virtual host on an AS400 (I don't know whether this somewhat
unusual configuration has any connection to my problem). My problem,
however, is this: as far as I can tell, tn5250 is not sending back the contents
of some fields. It does work correctly for most fields, and I'm not sure
what determines the fields that trigger this, but on some screens I enter
things normally and the host responds as if I some fields had been blank
that were not.
A few particular cases I've observed this in: When I try to run RESTLIBR
to restore from tape, I get an error because the S/36 thinks I haven't entered
a tape location, and guesses wrong. When I try to edit a file using whatever
editor POP uses, I tend to blank out the file -- the fields used for the lines
of the file are sent back blank, and the server thinks I've deleted them.
When I try to compile a COBOL program (again from POP), I get errors
required fields not being filled in, even though they are.
I've tried using tcpdump to spy on the data being passed back and forth
in hopes of figuring out why some things work and some don't, but haven't
had any luck -- no comprehensible ASCII seems to be passing over the
link. I could provide tcpdump logs if they would be useful, though.
I'm using the version of tn5250 from Debian unstable, which is 0.16.1.
Thanks in advance for any light you guys can shed on this issue -- I'm
eager to get it solved, as until then I'm forced to go down the hall to the
Windows box any time I want to access the S/36.
