My strategy, was to first, do whatever it took to establish a simple
dial-up connection, so I could surf the web, and send/receive email.

Once this was accomplished, I began to wean myself of Windows a little
at a time, by moving Internet-related stuff more and more, to the *nix
box (I use Red Hat, but choosing a distro is very subjective), so
that I could avoid as much as possible, having a target painted on my
chest, which is what running Windows on-line is more or less like.

I still needed to use Windows for a lot of off-line stuff, though, so
my first method of moving data back and forth, was the dual-boot
method... having Red Hat and Windows on the same box, with the
operating systems in separate partitions, and the data on FAT32
partitions on a separate HD, where it could be read and written to by
both OS's.

Now, I have expanded this to a small network, With Windows, Red Hat,
and FreeBSD all plugged into the same network (2 subnets, actually),
with a Samba fileserver to share data between the OS's, and a
printserver that presently works with Windows, but not yet *nix, as
this is all still a true work in progress, with a lot of rough edges,
where I am still figuring out what I am doing... or not.

I played around with learning Linux at the 'study' level for a while,
but I just didn't really make any progress until I force myself to use
Linux in a production environment (my small business), where failure,
and extended procrastination, were not viable options.
