Buy a hardware modem, like a US Robotics. Make sure it says it is a
hardware modem, because USR also sells a line of Winmodems, which are
a bad idea on Windows (they use the CPU to do what the modem should be
doing), and which Linux generally does not like.

For laptops, PCMCIA modems usually work, at least I have never found
one that did not.

The name of the C/C++ compiler is gcc. It is already installed on your
computer. At the command prompt, type 'man gcc' to bring up the manual
page for it.
