Yes, the idea being that you're doing something wrong after all. There's
nothing to prevent grub from overwriting the MBR, excepting human error (for
instance, letting it write to a wrong disk). Screwing up with the parametres is
made extremely easy by the inane notation used hd(0,1) for /dev/hd... er...
damn, I forgot it again.
Say what MBR you're trying to install GRUB into, and what parametres you're
giving to grub - I'm sure many people here can see the error at one glance.
