Computers get IP addresses from a DHCP server, which Samba doesn't
provide. If you don't have an internet router providing a DHCP server
for your local network, which you wouldn't using just a crossover cable,
you should just set a set of static IPs on your machines, preferably in
the 192.168.xxx.yyy subnet.

You can shut computers down over an SSH connection. I do it all the
time. As long as this person's print server has an SSH server running,
all he has to do is log on to the machine over SSH and issue the
shutdown command.
