With Fedora, you're running GNOME by default. You're correct.
Regarding your issues with Firefox and BOINC, I'd follow Cameron's
suggestion and upgrade to a later version of Fedora.

ln creates links. The Windows equivalent of this is a Shortcut. In
programming, it's called a pointer. A link is a file that does nothing
other than point to another file. If open a link that points to a text
file in a text editor, you'll be editing the referenced file, for example.
