If it will run XP, it should run Linux just fine.  You might want
more memory though.

Go to distrowatch.com to read about the various versions.  Pick one
for yourself.  You did not mention a network card.  You should 
probably stick with wired network as wireless can be difficult for 
experienced Linux people.  Almost any distro will come with Firefox
for browsing the internet and Thunderbird or something else for 
email.  Finally, learn GIYF (Google is your friend).  Bookmark
google.com/linux.
