Yeah, I'm tech-y, just not all that Linux-y yet. I've only been a
Linux user for a few months.
An overview of distros I saw online (don't remember where anymore,
sorry) actually did put Fedora in the "Fairly easy but may require
some advanced knowledge" category...but I haven't needed any knowledge
more advanced than reading up on certain commands (like chmod) in the
Essential Commands Linux Pocket Guide ($9.95 at Borders) or the
ability to follow procedures that other folks have laid out. :)
SimplyMEPIS was in that same category, but I haven't had any trouble
with that, either.
I'm *sure* now the PCLOS/Synaptic issues on the cafe computer were
related to lack of disk space. After attempting to upgrade packages,
I discovered that I couldn't even log in anymore, except as root --
some error about being unable to write to temp directory -- and that
hda1 (mountpoint=/) partition was 100% full, while hda5 (=/home) had
1.2GB free. Since it was a near-virgin install, I had no compunction
about blowing it away; I manually changed the partitioning to a more
oldsk00l scheme...hda1 300MB=/boot, hda4 388MB=swap, hda5 2.8GB(i.e.
rest of drive)=/. Cafe owner won't ok spending any money at all for
better drive, *sigh*. But this may still work; as an internet kiosk,
not a lot of user junk will be permitted to collect.
