I tried this method in SimplyMEPIS 7.0 and it worked great. If you try it make sure you turn off Compiz-Fusion desktop effects. The two taskbars are startling at first. There are hotkeys that you can use to get the VM desktop back. The default is Left-Alt+L. You can set it at anything that you want in VirtualBox.
I wish this feature was available in VMServer which I prefer to VirtualBox, mainly because I can't get sound or network card installed in VirtualBox. They can be finicky with VirtualBox but work flawlessly in VMWare. It is a small complaint since I can browse from the Linux menu and the sound works in Linux.
