Hmmm. Please ignore it. I am back to top posting because of this.
Also I found this additional source:

You are using a very old kernel.and a distro which is not intended for
desktop use. Unless you really need to use Redhat which is intended for servers
then you would be better advised to get a more recent distro and kernel.
Fedora is the open source equivalent to Red Hat and it is free to download and
copy. You can get Fedora Core 8. Stay away from the experimental Core 9
releases. We have several Fedora experts here. I am not one. Fedora does have a
GUI and will give you better results than Redhat. It is not a beginner's distro
though.
I don't know what hardware you have so it hard to make a recommendation. If you
insist on using Redhat, then you must have a good reason. You probably do not
need to boot into graphical mode and can do everything that Redhat does from
the commandline.
This may resolve your problem:
You can boot into "single" mode and then edit /etc/inittab:
When the grub screen comes up, press any key to stop the countdown
clock. Highlight your OS to boot and then press 'e' to edit. On the
line which starts with "kernel", add the word "single" (without
quotes). Enter to accept changes and then 'b' to boot. You should then
be root in single user mode. Use vi or nano to edit /etc/inittab (read
up on vi if you haven't used it before). Change the line in inttab that
looks something like this:
id:5:initdefault:by
replacing the '5' (graphic boot) to '3' (text mode). Save the file and
reboot.
You will not get a GUI with Redhat so it is probably a waste of time to try to
change back to graphical boot.
I hope that I have not misunderstood the problem and this helps you at least to
get to a bash prompt. Good luck!
