Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] Epson Aio Drivers for CX8400 w/o Fax
Recently purchased an Aio Epson Stylus CX8400 Printer. OS is
Xandros
Premium 4.0 Linux. Have not been able to locate Drivers that will
download & install to run the Printer. Have been searching for a couple
of weeks now!
Works on Windows Xp! But I'd rather use Xandros Linux. Should I just
give up trying to get it to work with Linux? Prior to that I purchased
an Aio Kodak 5100 that I had to return for lack of Linux driver support.
Am I being unreasonable an asking for tooo much?? Is this the Status
Quo? I Must be missing something? Suggestions & assistance would be
very much appreciated.
Kindest Regards,
Pete
Another problem that you might have is that Xandros is not known for being on
the leading edge. The distro is 7 or 8 months old and the kernel was probably
not a recent release to begin with. I hope that they have improved in this
respect, but I doubt it. When I last used Xandros they still were using 2.4xx a
year after most distros had been using 2.6xx.
Much of the hardware detection relies on the kernel. If the kernel is old and
the hardware is new it is like using a computer that is old. The distro cannot
recognize something that as far as it knows does not exist.
Linux uses CUPS (Common Unix Printing System). Foomatic and Gutenprint/Gimp
Print do the actual leg work (driver and rasterizing).
I would update the kernel and CUPS/Foomatic to the latest version in your
repositories and go from there.
Here are some resources:
http://openprinting.org/driver_list.cgi
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
Best of luck!
