I don't know what could be causing that, I'd have to reinstall from scratch (!) if I came across anything like that. I'd like to note that 2.4.x is a very old kernel, you should look into getting a Linux with a 2.6.x kernel. Which leads into the next question, what distribution of Linux are you using? This will tell us what tools you have available, as different distros often use different console commands.
