Of course, I have other

issues with *buntus that have nothing to do with how well they work ;)

Ubuntu and *it's* derivative, Linux Mint, are gorgeous, but I don't

like the "rootless" administration scheme. It perpetuates bad Windoze

habits. But that's just me. And there's nothing wrong with Open SuSE

per se, but liking or disliking a distro is sometimes *not* about pure

performance speed, which is what the recommendation made here was

based on...

I have to disagree with this statement. Having used Ubuntu and other distros
for a long time, I see advantages to both approaches of adminstration. My
disagreement is in the assertion that Ubuntu is "rootless" and that it produces
bad habits. You can simulate root by using sudo su. Having no root user has
many advantages.

For more on sudo and its advantages see:
http://www.softpanorama.org/Access_control/sudo.shtml

Ubuntu uses sudo which requires a password. It is as secure as MEPIS which uses
su to become root plus an administrative password. By default Ubuntu does not
allow logging in as root. Allowing anyone to logon as root is far more
dangerous than sudo and in some ways Ubuntu may be more secure than distros
that allow you to logon as root.

Any comparison of Ubuntu and Windoze in regard to security is very misleading.
Ubuntu is as secure as any Linux distro and any attempt to equate the two is to
misrepresent Ubuntu. This is unfair to them and their users, which is a
substantial number.

As user in Ubuntu you have no more privileges that you do in PCLOS, MEPIS or
any other distro. To do any administrative tasks you need to provide a password
whether the distro uses sudo or not.

For the newbie it easier to remember one password than two and to keep straight
in his or her mind what each one does. This is the main reason to use sudo. The
first password is next to useless anyway. It only allows you login and do basic
functions to your own files. The real power lies in knowing the admin password
and both su and sudo accomplish this.

I am not using Ubuntu but MEPIS 7.0. I chose it over Ubuntu for various
reasons. I don't feel the need to rag on Ubuntu simply because I have elected
to use another distro.

I don't think that we should be bashing various distros. We can and should
promote the ones that we favor, but it should stop there. I also think that we
have an obligation to be accurate as far as we are able.

Ubuntu is the leader in terms of its usage on desktops on all statistics that I
have read except Distrowatch (which uses clicks to its site and is therefore
open to abuse by bots) and we should not look down on it because of its
success. I wish them only well. We all benefit from their success.

As Linux becomes more widely adopted drivers and programs become available to
all of us. An example of this is Google recently paying Crossover to make
Photoshop work in Wine. As the demand increases we will all have more options.

You can dis Windows all you like but please stop there. Your comment gives a
bad impression and is not accurate.
