Are you sure that 10.0.0.1 isn't already taken? Usually, the .1
address is the gateway of the network.

One other guess (I realize you're new, so it's a bit hard to know what
other information to give us, I'll get to that in a moment) is that for
one reason or another, the card is getting its address from a DHCP
server.

If you automatically got that address, then I go with my first guess,
that there's a DHCP server (probably from your router if you use one)
and its getting the address from there. It's possible that it loses the
10.0.0.1 address because the router already has that.
When I say a better idea of the network, I mean, for the moment, please
explain a little about how you set it up. Again, guessing, but I wonder
if you have set up a router and if the computers are getting their
addresses from it.
