You don't tell us which distro you are using. Amarok is available in any KDE based distro. Each one is different in the way it handles mp3s. Some distros come with multimedia proprietary packages pre-installed. Others such as Ubuntu require you to install them separately for legal and ethical reasons. In Ubuntu you need to install the restricted extras for your version. Some distros include the w32codecs, while others have stripped them from the repositories due to use being illegal in some countries. Let us know what you are using when you ask a question.
