I use a directory called /home/download. My theory is that should
I want to install a different OS or newer Mint, I will save the
home partition anyway. In that way I will have my prior downloads
ready when I need them for the new OS/version. That being said,
this is more of a personal preference than anything else.

I think I already saw where Scott answered this one.

I don't use a firewall at all. While in the Windows world, there
are many nefarious programs that want to use your machine, in Linux
this is not such a problem. First, to do almost anything, they
would need root access which means they would also have to figure
out sudo. Second, because the sheer number of installations of
windows is larger, most bad guys target that platform not Linux.
Finally, installation on Linux can often depend on the specific
flavor. This would be difficult for a bad guy to program and
encourage them to find an easier platform for their activities (read
Windows). You will find that on more difficult packages you will
have a hard time installing and getting some programs working and
you have knowledge of your system and the proper access.

Just my $.02 worth.
