Hi, Thank you for showing such patience to an extreme newbie. You asked:
"Are you hooking your laptop to a cable where the other end of the cable is connected directly to the cable modem?" Yes, it is a TWC cable modem that runs both my internet and my telephone. "If yes, was that cable plugged in, both ends, when you installed Ubuntu?" Yes, it was plugged in, and while Windows 7 was able to detect the modem and the settings so that I was able to connect with that OS, Ubuntu was not. "With the cable between the cable modem and the laptop, there should be one or more lights that come on the cable modem and possibly a light on the laptop too. Finally, have you tried a different cable?" I didn't try a different cable because the internet connection is working fine. If I boot to Windows I can connect to the internet; if I boot from Ubuntu, I cannot. "If there is no wire and you are able to connect to the internet using Windows, please let us know that also. We will work from there." I'm not sure what you mean by "wire". I have a modem with a wire/connection to my telephone and a wire/ethernet connection to my laptop. The ethernet connection to the computer is working fine as is the telephone connection to the phone. The problem has nothing to do with the functionality of any hardware. FYI, I contacted TWC and they said that I needed to get support from Linux as the internet connection is fine. "Please tell us exactly which Ubuntu you installed. It is possible to download many different flavors of Ubuntu and some install what is called Network Manager (or equivalent) and some don't." I'll have to get back to you on that. It's the latest non-BETA version, 10.04 I think, but I'll have to check to be sure. Based on my conversation with customer service at TWC, the modem is set to provide the IP address via DHCP. "Please tell us as much as you can about the laptop. For example, who made it, what model number is it." It's a Toshiba Satellite L655. "We will get it working if you are willing to be patient with us." Hey, I'm grateful that you are so patient with me!
